Chapter Fourteen

My anger brewed to a high boil on the drive over to the guild, and it felt as though at any moment my head would explode. Dragging my suitcase behind me, I stomped into the guild’s training room.

The room contained three main training areas. In one area stood two state-of-the-art treadmills, a rowing machine, and a stationary bike. The free-weight area included pull-up bars, adjustable training benches, barbell sets, dumbbells, and kettlebells. A competitive-sized wrestling mat filled the final area. The far wall displayed an impressive variety of weapons. Sword, knives, polearms, and spears were some of our past hunters’ favorites.

Arden trotted in behind me and jumped onto a pile of exercise mats, spun in a circle, then settled himself in. Thian sat on the floor cross-legged, focused on his laptop while Edan stood chatting in a circle with Blodwyn, Alvar, and Catequil.

I checked Dropbox for résumés. So far, no applicants. “Why are you all just standing around?” I asked.

Five sets of eyes turned to me at once.

Catequil answered. “We’re, uh, taking a break?” It sounded more like a question. “We just finished with weapons training.”

“Yes,” Edan said, while wiping his neck with a towel. “I was telling them all about your famous battle-axe.” He gave me a wink. “Maybe you could give them a demonstration.”

“Oh yeah. I’d love that.” Catequil slammed a fist into his palm. “I’ve heard so many stories about the fabled axe.”

The mention of Slicer sent my mind reeling back to the bloody battle when we sealed the preeminent tear. The battle that took the life of my mentor, Master Kiano. My stomach recoiled, and I could almost smell the stench of copper. After that battle, I’d put Slicer into storage and hadn’t touched the axe since.

Years after we’d sealed the tear, I fought my internal battle of toxic thoughts about how I’d failed to save my guild mates’ lives. If Slicer and I were so invincible, why had so many died? If I’d been faster, more strategic, or more ruthless, perhaps they’d still be alive. Just like Aunt Dot should still be alive.

“No time for a demonstration today. And break time is over. You need to get back to training.” I pointed at the illusion mage. “Blodwyn.” She jumped and her eyes widened with dread. Then I pointed at the elf. “And Alvar. Show me a hand-to-hand fight against Catequil.”

A ring of flowers appeared on Blodwyn’s head. “But he’s so strong.” She wrung her hands together as she looked from me to Catequil.

“Demons will always be larger and stronger than you.” Pots of daisies flashed behind Blodwyn. “Use your speed and cunning to get the best of your opponent. Working together, you two should be able to get the advantage over Catequil.”

Alvar’s hand raised into the air. “With all due respect, I’d like to pass. I don’t want to injure my hands.”

At that moment, the blazing cauldron of emotions I’d fought so hard to contain smashed through my weakened defenses. The anger, guilt, failure,
